Course summary
Part 1: Teaching and learning | This 25-hour classroom-based course is the essential first step in becoming a Type Rating Instructor (TRI) or Synthetic Flight Instructor (SFI). Through a combination of theoretical learning and practical exercises, candidates will develop critical teaching skills. The course focuses on understanding and applying effective teaching methods and evaluating pilot performance. Key content:

Part 2: Technical training | This module consists of 10 hours of instruction aimed at developing a candidate’s technical knowledge and ability to deliver type-specific training. Candidates will prepare and present lessons based on the Type Rating syllabus and receive feedback from experienced course instructors. Content:

Part 3: Flight instruction | The Flight Instruction module consists of 10 hours of practical training, using fixed-base and full flight simulators. This module focuses on instructing pilots in both normal and abnormal operations, with an emphasis on real-time assessment, Threat & Error Management (TEM), and Crew Resource Management (CRM). TRI Sim to TRI ZFT/Lifus upgrade course | This course is designed specifically for airline customers looking to upgrade their instructors from TRI Sim to TRI Zero Flight Time (ZFT) and LIFUS. It provides a combination of ground school and simulator training, ensuring that candidates gain the necessary skills to conduct zero flight time training (ZFTT) in a live operational environment. This upgrade course is not available to self-sponsored trainees and is tailored exclusively for airline-sponsored candidates. Course structure:

Prerequisites
FCL.915.TRI.TRI
An applicant for a TRI (Type Rating Instructor) certificate must:
- Hold a CPL, MPL, or ATPL pilot license in the appropriate aircraft category
For a TRI (Multi-Pilot Airplane) certificate:
- Have completed 1,500 hours of flight time as a pilot on multi-pilot airplanes.
- Have completed 30 route sectors within the 12 months preceding the application date, including take-offs and landings, as PIC or co-pilot on the applicable airplane type. Of these, 15 sectors may be completed in a Full Flight Simulator (FFS) representing the same type.
FCL.915.SFI.SFI
An applicant for an SFI (Synthetic Flight Instructor) certificate must:
- Hold or have held a CPL, MPL, or ATPL in the appropriate aircraft category
- Have completed, within the 12 months preceding the application, the proficiency check for the issue of the specific aircraft type rating in a Full Flight Simulator (FFS) representing that type
For SFI(A) on multi-pilot aircraft, the candidate must also have:
- At least 1,500 hours of flight time as a pilot on multi-pilot airplanes or powered-lift
- Completed within the 12 months preceding the application: Three route sectors on the flight deck of the applicable aircraft type, OR, two Line-Oriented Flight Training (LOFT) simulator sessions, each lasting at least two hours between two different aerodromes, including pre-flight planning and debriefing
