What is a flight recorder?
A flight recorder, commonly known as a black box, is a crash-survivable device that captures aircraft data and cockpit audio to support accident investigation and flight safety analysis. Despite the "black box" nickname, flight recorders are painted bright orange to aid recovery. Modern aircraft typically carry two types: a flight data recorder (FDR) that logs thousands of flight parameters, and a cockpit voice recorder (CVR) that records flight crew audio. Acron Aviation has manufactured certified flight recorders for over 60 years.
What does a cockpit voice recorder capture?
A cockpit voice recorder (CVR) captures the audio environment of the flight deck, including flight crew conversations, radio communications, automated alerts and warnings, and ambient cockpit sounds such as engine noise and switch activations. This audio helps investigators reconstruct the sequence of events and crew decision-making leading up to an incident. Current standards require CVRs to retain a continuous recording of the most recent 25 hours of operation.
Why are flight data recorders kept in water?
Flight data recorders are not stored in water - the association comes from their underwater locator beacon (ULB), a device that activates on contact with water and emits an acoustic signal for up to 90 days to help search teams locate the recorder after an accident at sea.
